Why Girls Human Rights Month?

Girls Human Rights Month, observed each February, exists to focus sustained national and international attention on the rights of girls - in law, policy and everyday life. Girls continue to face systemic inequality, gender-based violence and barriers to opportunity. A dedicated month creates structured space for education, dialogue and action across schools, universities, institutions and civil society. February is not symbolic. It is a coordinated period for raising visibility, strengthening accountability and advancing practical change.

What Happens In February?

Throughout the month:

Educational establishments, institutions, and civil society organisations host rights-focused programmes;
Young leaders participate in structured dialogue;
Public and legal institutions engage in discussion;
National and international convening take place;
Leadership and measurable impact are recognised.

Why It Matters?

A single day is rarely enough to address systemic inequality. A month allows more sustained engagement, cross sector collaboration and meaningful progress. Girls Human Rights Month connects youth voice with institutional responsibility - ensuring that awareness leads to action, and action leads to implementation.

Right to Education

Around the world, 129 million girls are out of school.
Menstrual Equity

500 million women and girls do not have access to sanitary products and hygienic facilities.
Sexual & Physical Violence

736 million women & girls, almost one in three, have been subjected to violence.
Climate Change

80 percent of people displaced by climate change are women and girls.
Domestic Violence

58 percent of females killed, were killed by intimate partners or family members.
Human Trafficking

92% of females who were trafficked, were done so for the purposes of sexual exploitation
Sexual Violence in Conflict

20 to 30% of women and girls in conflict-affected settings experience sexual violence.
Female Genital Mutilation

At least 200 million women and girls, aged 15–49 years have been subjected to this procedure.
Child Marriage

650 million women alive today were married as children.
